Gardening Calendar

Support and maintain your garden's growth throughout the year with our monthly tips and tasks reminders. Click on the month for more specific task information.

WINTER

This month, help your local bird population brave the winter. Birds need high-energy, high-fat foods during the cold months and regular refreshing of water. You can also provide nest boxes and build up pet fluff in a pinched-off chicken wire tube to line nests in the coming months. Click for more tips and tasks for December.

Tidy and Repair

This is the time of year to tidy your garden and keep beds clear for the growth coming. It's a time for repairing fences, sheds, garden furniture and tools. It's a great time to clear away dead wood for much, composting or other purposes. Click for more tips and tasks for January.

FEBRUARY

Trees and Hedges

Protect hedges and evergreens from the weight of snow. Prune deciduous shrubs and hedges fairly hard if needed and plant bare-root trees and shrubs. Check which fruit and veg you can already begin planting, weather permitting. Click for more tips and tasks for February.

SPRING

Weed, Mulch, & Sow

This month, get those early weeds out from your beds and keep them at bay by mulching 3-4 inches deep in preparation for planting next month. Sow seeds indoors/in greenhouses and get bare-root trees and roses into the ground while you can. Hang that pet fluff tube you started in December down from a popular branch or fence. April is a time to think ahead about what you want to see growing in your outdoor spaces. It's also a time to start building up your beds and getting some of those young plants into the ground. Plant bulbs for summer flowering. Be sure to inform yourself about fertillising recommendations for plants you're not familiar with. Click for more tips and tasks for April.

Pests, Support and Re-Pot

As temperatures rise, May is the time to weed early, support climbers, tender shoots, treat early signs of insect damage, and it's your last chance to repot those over-crowded plants for the growing season. If some plants require fertilsing, get them onto that schedule and keep track of what is needed when, and note which plant you fed. Click for more tips and tasks for May.

SUMMER

Feed, Water and Maintain

Maintain consistent growth with regular feeding and watering this month. Check watering timers have full batteries and emitters are unclogged. Keep on top of weeds, pests and diseases before they cause real damage. Order next spring's bulbs to plant in the autumn. Click for more tips and tasks for June.

Paint and Maintain

Warm days this month are perfect for painting garden furniture, fences and outbuildings. Be sure to keep on top of weeds, watering, pests and fertilization. Deadhead regularly to keep those beautiful blooms coming and control overly vigorous growth wit light pruning and supports. Click for more tips and tasks for July.

Harvest, Water and Prune

Harvest tomatoes, corn, beans and other summer crops when ripe. Early summer bloomers that have finished can be tidied up and pruned back. Continue to maintain growth with water, weeding and the recommended fertilising schedule for your particular plants. Click for more tips and tasks for August.

AUTUMN

Harvest and Protect

This month is a time of harvesting fruit and vegetables. It's also a time to start looking to the coming months of clearing and protecting plants and water features from autumn debris and cold. Learn how to best store your fruit and vegetables for use throughout the winter. Click for more tips and tasks for September.

Clear and Collect

Be sure to stay on top of clearing fallen leaves from the garden this month. Compost them for use later. Collect apples and pears and store them for the winter. Raise pots that might crack during a freeze and remove their drip trays. Withhold fertilser as plants slow down for winter. Click for more tips and tasks for October.

Prune and Shelter

This month, wind and frost can do damage. Prune roses back, which will protect them from wind damage. Shelter frost-vulnerable pots under shelter or wrap them in a plant cover.
